Eating Disorders

”In the United States, as many as 10 million females and 1 million males are fighting a life and death battle with an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia. Millions more are struggling with binge eating disorder”.

PATRICIA CALI, MS, RD, LD, CDE has worked in the area of eatingdisorders for over 15 years. She has been a member of medical teams including physicians, psychotherapists and psychiatrists. This collaboration has allowed her a greater understanding of the unique nutritional and psychological needs of patients with eating disorders such as:

  • Anorexia
  • Bulimia
  • Compulsive Overeating
  • Distorted Eating

Nutritional counseling will provide a structure for the development of long-term healthy eating habits and a mind free from the demands of eating disorder. At the initial visit a careful history is taken to evaluate your usual routine, food preferences and physical activity, from which a nutrition assessment is performed to determine your energy and nutrient needs. The program embraces a non-diet approach, and you will learn how to develop a healthy and trusting relationship with your body, tuning in to its messages of hunger and fullness.

Topics covered during the sessions include, but are not limited to: the recovery process; physiological functions of food/nutrients; energy balance; role, energy and satiety values of different essential nutrients; recognizing and working with hunger and fullness signals; body image; dietary adjustment for bowel discomfort; fluid and energy balance; safe/unsafe foods; vegetarian diets; BMI; physical activity; strategies to deal with holidays and social gatherings, etc.

Care is taken so that you feel comfortable with the sessions as you are guided to recovery, in a safe and non-judgmental environment.
